Alternative Alternator

Post by Geoff Ryall-Harvey » Mon Feb 03, 2014 6:47 pm

Please excuse the low quality phone picture.

I fitted this Nippon Denso alternator to the Avion recently. It's about half the size of the Paris-Rhone unit that was there previously. Much shinier too...

This is the same Nippon Denso alternator that is sold for £300 by Demon Tweeks and others - part numbers are exactly the same. Brand new and boxed - it cost £25 from a John Deere lawn mower supplier.

Note also the stainless turnbuckle used as a tensioner.

Hi Geoff
Can you please post more details about the alternator - wattage, dimensions etc. Also what is the Pt No, and where is this wonderful supplier?
Many thanks.
Vincent.

It's a 40 amp 12V internal regulator model. The guys at Demon Tweeks will tell you that theirs have extra bearings and a rear fan - they all do.

I bought it from a tractor spares company on eBay - it was cheap because it was unboxed. Part Number is Nippon Denso 196300. They haven't got any left but if you take the time to trawl through eBay there are plenty of small alternators around;

See eBay No 141128458678

Most modern alternators are double the output of a standard 2CV alternator, have an internal regulator, better bearings and are smaller. A lot have ribbed pulleys but you can swap them for vee pulleys and it's quite easy to fabricate brackets to fit them to your Special.

I see there are two more on eBay now so I've bought one.
