Re: Change in MOT exemption for 223's
I have been looking into this again! Firstly, I assume a status of MOT expired is not a problem if you do not need one. Secondly, the Gov web site was confusing at the time of the post. As stated below it did say MOT exemption was for vehicles registered over 40 years with no substantial changes. Ho...

FBHVC insurance
Just trying to renew insurance on my Blackjack Avion and called FBHVC as recommended in Flatout magazine.
They offer the same cover as if you call Peter James and would not insure it as the kit car was built is less than 35 years ago......
So only of benefit for old kit car builds.

Re: Change in MOT exemption for 223's
Glad I read your post! I too had relied on MOT exemption under the 'no major modifications for 30 years rule'. Rules clearly different now stating built or registered over 40years ago with no major modifications. My MOT status is expired! Interestingly I had signed up for MOT renewal reminders and h...

Re: Top end noise
Following Ian's entry from May-2024, I also set the clearances to the minimum 6 thou rather than 'safer' maximum 8 thou. Purists might say the wider gap of 8 thou is safer as valves will not be held open, but 6 thou is the quoted minimum and should be adequate for normal road use. The difference in ...

Re: Top end noise
Was source of the top end noise ever identified? I have an engine with a similar issue - loud tap from the top of a cylinder hot or coldf. Obvious suspects were worn small end or wide tappets. Tappet check revealed an exhaust at 19thou ins., others also wide. All were reset to 8thou ins. as per maxi...

Re: Engine change trouble
Ref gearbox mount fixing bolts, on my 223 I put 2 holes in the front bulkhead aligned to the bolt heads.
This enabled access for a socket onto the bolt heads - much easier than trying to work on them with a spanner in the engine bay!

Re: Jacking point
On my 223 with a Lomax chassis, to avoid twisting the chassis I put a piece of 4x2 timber under the chassis cross member that spans from one side rail to the other. Then put the jack under the wood at centre of the cross member. This keeps the car level and spreads the load down both side chassis ra...

Re: Lomax 223 anti roll bar
I have now had a resigned ARB made that uses the original front suspension arm fixings. The routing was quite demanding to achieve adequate dynamic clearances to the steering column and rear gearbox support. The part was made by Wiz-Parts who did an excellent job with exacting tolerances and at a re...

Re: Lomax 223 anti roll bar
Thanks for the explanation. I have only previously seen linking the rear dummy and rear active arms to enable both rear springs to support the single active rear arm to increase load carrying capacity. Affecting handling has not been mentioned. In a ‘straight on speed bump type contact’ with a 4 whe...
