Gear lever connection to gearbox
I have a recently acquired Lomax 223 and am having trouble selecting first and reverse gears and sometimes fourth gear. The horizontal gear lever rod seems to have been deliberately bent where it goes through the bulkhead in the passenger compartment and I think that may be the reason I am experiencing trouble with gear selection.
My question is:
Should this horizontal rod be absolutely straight, from dashboard mounting bracket to gearbox lever?
Advice gratefully received.
Thanks,
Brian

Re: Gear lever connection to gearbox
The quick answer is the bend has to be there! Bog standard 2cv gear stick but extended length! The only thing i had to do was shorten the upright stick from the gearbox, because it fouled the bonnet! After it comes through the bulkhead the bend should be upright to the gearbox lever,in neutral The bend is what pushes the lever in to position for gear selection! Hope this helps!

Brian
If you look at my recent post on Floor Mounted Gear Change, Geoff has added a picture of the connection between the Citroen umbrella gear lever and the shaft coming out of the top of the gear box.
This explains the mechanism, getting the gear changes right comes with timr and prsctice
Cheers

Re: Gear lever connection to gearbox
Brian,
have you checked that the clamp at the base of the gear lever stalk is tight and, more important, preventing the stalk from turning on the short, splined stub which projects out of the gearbox top cover?
If there is any movement there, you will have trouble selecting gears...

Re: Gear lever connection to gearbox
the rubber donut rings between lever and vertical also need to be good to be precise in action...
you don't really need to actually hold the knob/ball just push or pull it with palm or fingers giving a slight left or right action..and baby powder on the tube NOT oil or etc...

Re: Gear lever connection to gearbox
Many thanks for everyone's replies. May I assume then that it goes without saying that the horizontal Citroen umbrella gear lever, together with, in my 233,an extension brazed on in order to reach the vertical gearbox stem, should be seen to be dead straight all the way to the short upturn just before the link with the gearbox stem?
In my machine I suspect that it is wrong that the horizontal component is slightly bent approximately halfway along its length as it passes through the bulkhead, when probably it should be straight.
I also suspect that the extension has been mis-aligned at the time of brazing such that , in neutral, the short upturn to the link with the vertical stem is not upright but listing to one side.
I am wondering in fact if all this is the result of a botch-up , tolerated by the previous owner.
I should be very glad of any further comments ,especially regarding my my two suspicions.

Re: Gear lever connection to gearbox
The way to tell is the gear knob inside the car should be upright in line with the outside bend! If it is not, then chop it off & weld it correctly! Good luck!
