Re: 4 gear problem
Venture. Make sure that all of your gearchange rubber bushes are in good order. A sloppy linkage is the most common problem for engaging gears.
The most common issue is at the top of the gear lever, coming out of the box.
Also, check that there is oil in the box.

Check also that the gear lever (the one coming out of the box) is rotated to an appropriate position on its splined shaft and that the pinch bolt is tight.

Re: 4 gear problem
My Lomax is jumping out of gear (though jumping suggests rather more energy than is evident - perhaps rolling?) out of gear on long downhill stretches. Does this advice still apply?

Re: 4 gear problem
My Lomax kept jumping out of 1st and after much searching I found that the black rubber mushroom on the top of the gearbox, where the selecter arm comes through, was not seated correctly thus preventing the selecter arm moving over far enough to fully engage first. It worth having a look at it as it is only held in place by a cable tie

Re: 4 gear problem
Hi Venture,
Just a thought but assuming all the bushes are in good order etc - have you taken up all the slack in the clutch cable and adjusted the free play at the pedal? I know from personel experience that although the clutch may not appear to be dragging (creeping forward when the clutch pedal is depressed) any residual rotation of the gearbox can make selecting gears very difficult - especially reverse, first and fourth.
Best of luck resolving your problems.

Re: 4 gear problem
Hi thanks to all who replied to my 4th gear problem have sorted it by lifting the gear stick end where it sits in a ball joint housing by 1/2 inch seems to have done the trick many thanks Dave & Jean ie venture.
ps Charlie has gone in to have custom made hood fitted as soon as he comes back I will post photos

Re: 4 gear problem
Dave,
I'm glad to here that you've resolved your 4th gear problem however, from your description of the fix, I think there's something not quite right.
The gear stick that you've apparently lifted by half an inch is clamped, via a pinch bolt, to a splined shaft that comes out of the "ball" joint. The splined shaft should have a notch cut into it that the pinch bolt is supposed to engage with and thus maintain the correct height of the stick as well as, perhaps, helping to prevent rotation. The clamp bolt should be 7mm HT (10.9) through the split clamp, gear stick and notch. Your fix suggests that, either your splined shaft has been chopped off below the notch, or you're using a smaller clamp bolt which will pass the splined shaft without the need for a notch. Whichever is the case, I'd be surprised if your original problem doesn't return at some time in the future as the strain gets too much for your fix.

Re: 4 gear problem
Hi huchii thanks for reply it was the other end of the gear the part in the car well. The gear rod from the gear stick to the gear box stalk was fouling the bulk head ie the raised moulding in the middle of the floor at the front othe foot well.So I did not have to alter the gear box end. Many thanks for your concern Dave
