Floor mounted gear change

Post by Peter Brooks » Wed Apr 01, 2015 4:30 pm

Can any one who has converted their car to a floor mounted gearchange please provide details of how to go about it.
I have tried to convert my Lomax, using a unit bought on this site from a fellow member, so I presume that it has at some stage been used in a Lomax.
The problem is that I can't seen to get the right amount of movement at the gear box end to enable me to select all the gears.
Information in respect of the length of the connecting rod and angles would be of assistance, along with pictures of succesful conversion would be great if that is at all possible.
I know many members feel that the umbrella change is best, but I kept getting sore knuckles from where I bang my hand on the dash.
As usual any help will be greatly apprecitaed
Thanks

Peter :cry:

Peter - you're correct in believing that the general view is the dashboard change is to be preferred. If the major issue is banging your knuckles on the dash then there is a better, cheaper and easier solution.

If you replace the standard issue rubber bushes and twisted bit of metal joining the umbrella stick and the gear lever with a couple of rose joints then you get a much smoother more positive change and the ability to adjust the position of the gear knob in relation to the dash.

You want a male and a female M6 rose joint plus a 30mm M6 bolt (not a set screw), an M6 nut (nylock is best) plus some M6 washers to use as packing ;

Try this eBay shop for rose joints;

There are always people looking for the GS floor change so you'd have no problem selling it on to recover your outlay.

Geoff
thank you for the advice to improve the umbrella stick, I will keep it as an alternative solution to the problem.
As I have now purchased the floor mounted unit I would like to have a try at fitting it.
I am always amazed at the things you do to your car it always looks top notch.
Thanks
Peter

Thanks Peter - I would advise using the rose joints anyway for the adjustability it will give. If you use two female joints and a length of M6 studding plus a couple of lock nuts then you can make the distance between the gear lever and the connecting rod whatever you want (within reason).

Geoff

as an interim measure, until I can sort out how to fit the floor remote, I am going ahead with your advice.
As you say, it will allow me to push the gear knob further away from the dashboard, so when trying to engage reverse, second and fourth I should spare my knuckles.
The rubber bushes in the citroen connecting plate look a bit iffy so this will save me having to replace them.
Your modification looks more substantial than the original twisted plate.
Once again thank you

Peter,
If you haven't purchased the rose joints as suggested by Geoff yet, I see from the linked site, that the company sell a matched pair, i.e. male and female rose joints that you can screw together, and therefore not need the piece of studding. True this solution won't give you as much adjustment but, fully screwed together they'll give you, I guess 30mm more clearance, and you can extend from there by probably another 15mm. The material used for these joints will also be much stronger than almost any studding you might use. (unless of course you chop a lump of thread from a decent set bolt!)
Just a thought.

Just a brief update.
After much bending and a little modification the floor mounted gear change is fitted.
Have just completed a 275 mile run around mid Wales and it worked a treat. :D
