Do the std cross box silencer cans have internal baffles

Post by Jimmy Cooper » Mon Sep 21, 2015 10:37 am

I talk of ones like this:-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191589153208? ... EBIDX%3AIT

Reason for asking is my 223 has developed a nasty sound when hot. Not engine based or g/box but sounds like the cross box. Sort of tinny rattle and maybe even a chuff sound but hard to tell. I am not well enough right now to dive under the car to remove box and look but am looking at reasons for the sound. When COLD the engine/silencer sounds wonderful. When hot this funny sound occurs. I wonder if it isn't the baffles that I assume are in there that may be spot welded and have come adrift (had that on a Li Lambretta scooter exhaust), or could it even be a fracture on a support bracket that 'opens up' with heat? Are they prone to this?
Any experiences with this stuff chaps?

Oh, haven't seen one of those Rosi crossboxes in years...
In answer to your question, all crossboxes have internal baffles and the Rosi branded ones did occasionally have a problem with the central (horizontal) baffle working loose.
A severe case could almost sound as though the big ends were on the way out. ;)

Depending on the amount of life left in the box, there were two options; the quick and dirty way involved using a ball pein hammer to deform the lower part of the casing near the middle seam to prevent the baffle from flapping around.
The other was to remove the box from the car, drill and plug weld to achieve the same effect.

I have done a similar job regarding baffles by drilling and using self tap screws with some 24hr Araldite etc. Need to raise the enthusiasm to work in the cold so.................... but must get it done!!!!
