Alternators Differences

Post by Mendip.Wursel » Fri Mar 11, 2016 8:48 pm

I was thinking of taking a spare alternators when we travel abroad this year, as I take back-ups of just about everything else.
I currently have one of the larger Iskra (AAG0702) alternators on the Lomax. If I purchased a smaller 13cm 2CV alternator as a spare would it fit okay (my reasoning ii this is lighter to carry)?
I know electrically there are some differences....
Many Thanks
Kevin

Should fit and work fine. You may have to take some spacers for the pivot bolt so that you can get the pulleys to line up. Maybe the electrical connectors will need an adapter or the wires lengthening. Trial fit it and make up the bits you need so that you can pack them all together.

Given the size and weight of it all, it may be worth carrying a small 12v gel battery, some jumper leads and a smart charger instead. Driving in daylight, without headlights on, you can drive at least 100 miles on a charged battery and then charge it again when you get to your destination.

By all means take a spare kev. But to save weight I would look in the front of yours and check if there is any green corrosion on the windings ,take the belt off and spin it to check bearings and also pull the brushes out to check for wear if it passes all that you should be ok. Definitely check charge voltage rate though regards voltage regulator

Mind you, the stator windings on some kit car alternators may have an easier life than in their original home.
Especially if there's no fan to launch gravel or other small particles of abrasive material in their direction after it's bypassed the grille...
