No tickover

Post by DMC » Sat Aug 27, 2016 5:35 pm

Hi to all carb guru's can you give me some pointers i have a 79 lomax 2cv fitted with the standard twin choke solex 26/35 according to the haynes manual
now i have removed it and given it a pretty thorough clean but the idle jet does not seem to be working the only way to keep it running is with the idle stop
screw about 6mm open and engine running at minimum 1500 revs. Looking in the haynes manual page 59 top left picture screw 20 and screw 19 seem
to be listed as idle control, do you think this maybe my problem, if so how can i make sure this is not blocked. Your advice would be greatly appreceated. Many thanks. Dave

Hi,
Idle is controlled by the jet immediately below the fuel inlet and the mixture screw (oblique screw on the front of the carb).

Remove the mixture screw and spring and check that the needle tip is intact and not bent. You may have to snip off the anti-tamper cover on this to access the slotted head. As a rough guide, screw it in very gently and then back it off 7 turns.

The other jet (on the front outer of the carb) needs to be removed and cleaned through by blowing/sucking.

None of the other jets in the carb have any significant effect on idle.

If you can get it to idle, then further adjustment of the mixture screw may be required to fine tune it.

Also, check the built-in fuel filter in the inlet for any debris.

Thanks for your reply admin, i have been giving these two items some attention, they are both clean and in good condition, but it was not 7 turns out more
like 3 turns also i did not know there was a filter in the inlet i will check this out. But i am now thinking i could have a plug breaking down at low revs
so i have ordered a new pair. Will post my findings when these jobs are done. Dave.

Update on my problem, i recently joined the pembelton site and browsing their topics i spotted a guy with exactly the same problem so i messaged him
and he said he soaked his carb in coca cola and so i did the same i left them for 24 hours washed it off in hot water then gave a good spray with
carb cleaner and drying off with compressed air. And hey presto i now have a tickover. So its all true what they say about the acid in coke, makes
you think what it does to your insides. But you have to remember coke was originally made as a medicine. Dave.

It does not make it gleam but it is noticably cleaner, a lot of the black tarnishing has gone to leave a dull alloy finish. If you want to clen your carb i think
its well worth the cost of a 2ltr bottle of coke dont buy the diet version you want the full strength original one. I used a 2.5 litre ice cream tub from lidl
the red one ice cream is fab by the way, i removed the screws from the top and loosened it and removed the idle jet and idle mixture screw, and left
them loose in the tub then filled tub with coke, 2 days would be good. Then wash with hot water and spray with carb cleaner and blow dry with air
line in every orifice you can find. I reasembled screw mixture jet screw in untill it gently binds then back out by 4 turns. You can fine adjust when
engine is warmed up. Hope it works. Dave.
