Fitting a charging light

Post by +GCP123+ » Thu Aug 30, 2018 10:34 am

Can anyone let me have wiring diagram for the fitting of a charging light on my car? 2CV based Burton. Alternator is two wire.

Geoff,
it is possible to simply wire in a lamp but it will only tell you alternator is being asked to charge, not if it is actually doing it.
Fitting a voltmeter is a better option.

Hi I have one of these on both my cars - really good - very easy to fit and wire across ignition switch.

Now thats neat, all benefits of the gauge in an easy to mount and read lamp module.

But as Bob wrote it wont tell you much voltmeter is a must and even better if you add an ampermeter then you know exactly what is going on.

I have one of those lights as well and it’s brilliant one wire to earth and one a switched live feed .it stays green when driving goes red if the volts drop ... simples 👍 With kit cars a voltage check when servicing with a multimeter is probably good practice anyway. .

Thanks all,

I already have a voltmeter but - guess what, I hadn't noticed that the voltage had dropped when there was a fault in the system - so I actually want to fit a light that comes on when the alternator is NOT charging, same as any modern car. Comes on with the ignition on, goes off when the alternator is charging but comes on if the alternator stops charging. I can also fit an ammeter but, I bet I don't notice the problem until it is too late!!!

But that’s what the light does we’re talking about ,,,,,.key on red light on ....engine running and charging turns to green .... engine running and not charging goes back to red.

OK,

Again thanks for the information.

Done a bit of searching having looked on-line at the link shown and have found item number 201338527109 on E Bay. 12mm LED showing red, amber, green depending on voltage supplied by the alternator. Can be changed via a link at the back of the item to shown voltage output from the battery rather then charge level if you wish. £12.98 including delivery. Two wire fitting. Take a look - seems pretty good! Almost what I want and have ordered one - will let you know how it goes once fitted.

Like to fit an ammeter but running out of room on the dash with various gauges and lights filling the space!

Kevin,

Yes, correct but I initially wanted a light that only came on when the alternator stopped working rather than a multi-coloured version - something that was bright and flashed up if a fault happened. However I have gone for the one on E Bay which is similar to the one mentioned - many thanks.

Geoff.
