Alteration of registration details

Post by hotfoothowell » Mon Mar 16, 2020 7:13 pm

Does anybody have any experience of altering, with the DVLA, the registration details of the donor vehicle for a Lomax (Lamda) with a new chassis, which I believe may have come from the Lomax works: and where the rest of the car comes from a ten year+ car, and how that relates to the exception from the IVA requirement that it does not apply to 10 year+ cars? I have the original V5.

Can you prove that this car was on the road in this format, correctly registered more than 10 years ago?

I had a Jago Jeep, on the road, registered as a Ford, Body type Jeep, using, the registration number of the donor Escort, as was allowed when the car was built.
Chrysler objected to Jeep being used as a body type, so DVLA changed the body type on my V5 to 4x4.
I made the mistake of telling DVLA that my car was not 4x4 and after much correspondence ended up with a Q plate.
Suggest leave well alone if car is already registered & on the road otherwise you might disturb a can of worms.

I built my Pembleton in accordance with the Regs and it passed MVSA first time, worth doing properly!

Regards

DVLA registrations are allocated on the chassis vin plate. Tell them that the chassis is new and you may open a can of worms and could end up with a Q plate. Use the original V5 - however, just what is it you wish to alter on the V5? The name? or the fact that it is a 3 wheeler, rather than a 4 wheeler? If the later then it should be a simple class change to 'tricycle'.

I have a Lomax 223. I was gifted it by my father who bought it in 1995. The car was built on the component parts from a Citroen 2CV, SNU830R, first registered on 23/04/1977. I have the V5C and the car is registered in my name and now on SORN.
The car was converted from the original Citroen 2CV at some point between 1991 and 1995. Who undertook the original conversion I do not know?
The unfinished conversion was purchased by my father on 04/08/1996. Neither my father nor the previous owner registered the vehicle in their name.
The car is now completed, rodents had eaten the seats and wiring and the engine was rebuilt and brakes overhauled.
Does the car require an MSVA or is it exempt?
Looking at all the details on the GOV.UK web site it is so confusing!
At this age it is MOT and tax exempt (if it was the original 2CV), but there appears to be the substantial changes exemption, although I can prove this was done over 30 years ago. I appreciate I would need to change the tax class to Vehicle of Historic Interest, but even that appears confusing!
How have you dealt with these issues?
Help, please!

I should email Dvla but if it doesn’t say tricycle in the v5 then it will need an Msva it will lose its historic free tax mot status and will be given another registration number from the same year as the original 2cv donor.. but it will be dated 2020 in the newV5 .. email Dvla but be careful because if you say you’ve cut up the donor you may lose that v5 so I would say what you are thinking of doing.. I could be wrong of course

For the MOT, all that is required is that you present a form (V112) when you do your tax (which is of course free, for a 40+ year old vehicle, but still needs to be done -- at the post office). The form is a declaration that no MOT is needed and the reason is "no significant change in 30+ years". I just did this, and as far as I can tell there's no further checks. I don't think there is any way they could check, to be honest, because I think the computerised records only go back to 2006!

Mine was already registered as a Lomax, by a previous owner. But I don't think that's too relevant, as the V5 says "Lomax, originally registered 1974", and I think that's what they look at for the tax rate. They altered the tax class to "Historic" as part of the process.

If the DVLA really want to check they probably can. My Lomax 223 was originally registered as a 2CV in 1978. I didn't know when it was rebuilt as a 223 so I wrote to DVLA to ask them what information they had on the car. It took a couple of shots because they wanted to know why I wanted to know. Because I told them that the car was an appreciating classic and the more information I had on the vehicle made it more interesting to a prospective buyer, they relented. They sent me some (very poor) copies of all they had on the car, with blacked out names and addresses. This included the change of taxation class to tricycle in 1989. The upshot being that when the road tax runs out early next year I can declare the car has had no major changes in the last thirty years.
