Hi Ray. Sorry to hear of your woes. Curious about what ignition system you have. I’ve had a Lumenition fitted on my LOMAX 223 for about three years now and once installed and set up then that’s it, no more adjusting needed. The oil cooler is in front of the timing box, so not having to faff around there is a real plus. The car starts ‘on the button’, ticks over like a sewing machine and goes like the clappers too. Incidentally, I’ve got a Boyer Bransden coil, NGK B7HS spark plugs fitted and I use either Shell V Power (99 RON) or TESCO MOMENTUM 99. The car seems to like them. Costs a bit more, but in the grand scheme of things... ;)

Hi kawlomax223
Don't know why your message has reappeared but my original response was " Hi thanks for the suggestions, I have the Mehari 2cv electronic ignition which is fairly new . I went for a 40 mile run today and it ran perfectly as usual."

I am pretty sure that the problem is a mixture of hot weather and unburnt fuel so I am waiting for a little more hot weather. {perhaps next year}

Try a different heat range of spark plug. Colder one in summer and hotter one in winter. The range of the plug is usually the number.

I have had an original Piranha ignition( now made by Lumenition) fitted for the last 22 years, fantastic unit, coils are 2 standard Lucas units wired in series, I added an extra heat sink to the unit as I like my electronics to run cool.

I had hoped to have closed this by now but everything I do seems to create a different problem .
My original problem got worse , every down hill my Lomax would pop and bang , so I thought `petrol` So I replaced the mixture control , the diaphragm accelerator pump, and the thick insulator and paper gaskets , cleaned the carburettor outside and inside, I also sprayed into the Carb whilst it was running. No more popping and banging going down hill , it now hesitates when I accelerate and pops whilst accelerating and also when I decelerate. So I changed the plugs and reset the timing on my electronic ignition . Its popping less but now if I rev the engine whilst stopped there isn`t
any hesitation but it continues to rev when I take by foot of the pedal, and then slowly goes back to normal tick over! looks like something is now sticking in the Carb ? I now plan to get a new coil just to give me a clean start with the electrics. Getting a new carb is expensive even the aftermarket ones are expensive , if its inevitable the Burton ones look good but the ECAS ones are cheaper, has anybody got any experience of them ?

Ray,
I bought a copy of a 2CV Solex carb direct from China, on eBay, at much lower price than from European suppliers.
Before fitting I measured all jet sizes & float height, everything was spot on.
Plating, finish and o rings all better than on a genuine Solex; more like a Japanese carb.
Fitted to car, worked perfectly out of the box, 10,000 miles on I am still happy.
Highly recommended.

My Lomax popped and backfired when I first bought it, even on the test drive. The previous owner told me that the carburettor was at fault as it was not the original type (another story which I have still not completed). I replaced the carburettor with a purchased used unit but the fault persisted. One clue was that the spark plugs were always different, one light and the other dark. After a lot of investigation I found that one of the manifold studs into the cylinder head had stripped, allowing some air into the mixture. Helicoiling the head fixed the problem.

Thanks both,
I am looking at the Chinese carbs they are about half price and possibly where some of those on sale in the UK come from ?
I also have one bark plug and one light plug but its always been like that an ran perfectly , I tried putting gasket seal around the manifold just to see if it made any difference but it didn't.

Thanks again
