Re: Oil Temp. Gauge
Hi all,
Have to agree with Davidm, the ideal place to sense any impending oil temp catastrophe is within the sump.
Sump Plug male/female adaptor reducers are available to simply enable the insertion of the temp probe in place of the sump plug.
Only issue then is to fabricate and attach steel sumpguard stretcher bars to the chassis immediately in front and behind the sensor location to prevent any sleeping policeman etc incident,

Re: Oil Temp. Gauge
Thanks again guys and pictures are magic, great to be able to see what we are all talking about. I'm drawn to the idea of finned Rocker covers and putting the temp. sensor into the sump drain plug.
I also spotted on E-bay some ...... finned, aluminium, oil-filter cooling covers !!!
Stay cool and thanks again

Re: Oil Temp. Gauge
The sump plug solution would only work if you are using a 2cv chassis, as the scrape marks on the plug on my Pembleton testify!

Re: Oil Temp. Gauge
I have the adapter plate on the oil filter mounting. On a standard 2CV chassis I cannot fit the larger filter, there is no space for it. I fitted new engine mounts but still the filter fouls the chassis.
My oil temperature in SW France at ambient temperatures to almost 40C touches 125C at times with only the standard oil cooler and Lomax rocker covers. I use full synthetic oil 10w-40 to allow for this.

Re: Oil Temp. Gauge
In the mocal sandwich plate between filter and block one variation comes with the hole for the temperature sensor …that’s what use now
Re: Oil Temp. Gauge
Non-invasive option is to put thermocouple probe on the oil cooler leg (oil filter side).
Measuresment will give an idea as to how hot the oil is after going thru the cooler.
It is battery powered. These simple units cant be connected to the car supply as the TC has the postive leg connected to the metal case ie it is earthed.
Cost with shipping appox £6.
You can obtain "unearthed" TC to replace the supplied item to get round the issue. Cost with shipping approx £7.
The downside is they are digital not analogue

Re: Oil Temp. Gauge
I like the thermocouple idea !
If I had found one to use with the car battery I would have fitted one. The locations I had thought of were either wedged between fins of the oil cooler OR to make a dipstick of thin metal tubing with the thermocouple in a pocket at the bottom.

Re: Oil Temp. Gauge
Hi Guys , many many thanks for info on Oil Temp. Gauge
2024 NOT a good year ...split from wife / moved house /triple bypass but hopefully 2025 will be a better year >
I'll fit a gauge first using one of those sandwich plates.. Will keep you informed
