MOT requirement??

Post by woodywoo » Thu Apr 20, 2017 8:52 am

I have a recently acquired 3 wheeler which was successfully MSVA'd in 2014 and so is coming up for its 1st MOT.
It does not have a fog light - can anyone confirm if one is necessary for an MOT pass?

Thanks, Nick CSC1933J

My Pembleton 3-wheeler doesn't have a fog light and sailed through it's MOT a month ago.

I was told (I didn't build her) that when it was first presented for it's MSVA (4 or 5 years ago) it failed because the fog light wasn't in the correct position, but the tester said it wasn't necessary so if it was removed it wouldn't have failed. Hence there's a spare switch on the dash!

Regards,

Paul

Thanks for the reply but I think I may fit one to help with visibility in poor conditions

I always thought that the bit's and bobs which were not on the donor vehicle were not necessary on a re-bodied Special, however, if the owner chooses to fit accessories and/or additional equipment, then it needs to comply with the current regulations for that equipment.

Hi

Basically it’s a tricycle, ie 3 wheel motorcycle so fog light not needed - ever seen a fog light on a motorbike?

I doubt the average mot tester would even consider its location unless somewhere outlandish - but if fitted must work only with lights on and have a warning light

The gov test for a new kit car is very very strict - should be as it certifies a safe build ( and costs well over £100!!), that would certainly have picked its position up

Tricycles are exempt from needing a rear fog light, Section 1.3 of the testers manual states "Tricycles and Quadricycles are not required to be fitted with rear fog lights". There is a specific section, number 9, for Tricycles and Quadricycles in the testers manual with no mention of rear fog lights.
