Having failed the IVA in my Burton, in part because the MotaLita type steering wheel was unacceptable due to the wood surround and the holes in the spokes, I am discovering that there is not a lot of conformity between manufacturers of steering wheels and bushes.
My present setup is the steering wheel on a quick release boss and secured by three m8( I think) bolts through to the Burton supplied steering column. At the IVA the examiner suggested I should return with the original Dyane steering wheel fitted which would be acceptable.
It doesn't fit! The three holes into the Burton column are symmetrical in an equilateral shape, the Dyane (and Burton confirm the 2cv) have a triangular arrangement but one side of the triangle between the holes is longer than the other two.
I therefore need to find another wheel. Does anyone know if the 2cv arrangement is universally typical, or the Burton arrangement more usual. Should I be able to buy any steering wheel or am I going to get caught out by different manufacturers choosing their own standards for this connection?
Any guidance would be very helpful. I should say that I do not think drilling the holes again in the Dyane wheel is an option, both in terms of room and accuracy and would hate to fail again, because the steering wheel does not turn uniformly lock to lock.
Many thanks in advance
Keith

Re: Steering Wheel bush connection
What about using an undrilled centre steering wheel - you can drill to suit your boss.

That's only one example - then after the test you can put your Mountney one back on.

Re: Steering Wheel bush connection
Hello Kevin
I've a feeling this reply may be a bit late.
Hopefully you've not been to CBS yet.
I too have a Mountney wheel on the single seater I'm trying to get ready for IVA. Mine also has the quick release device sold by CBS. ( the threads are advertised as 8mm but are in fact 5/16 UNC -they didn't know)
My fix was to turn a piece of 10mm marine ply to fit the recess in the wheel. To this I glued some very dense, 20mm thick foam and then, using my bandsaw I cut around the ply at 30degs. I wouldn't be happy to leave it there after the test, but I think (hope ) it will be ok for the test.
For the spokes I've cut 10mm foam to the shape of the spoke and intend to cover that with black vinyl glued or stitched at the back of the spoke.
Turn the car around perhaps?
Ian
