Burton idling and flickering LEDs

Post by kgnoble » Mon Sep 16, 2019 4:11 pm

Hi All

I have just been finally preparing my car for the IVA retest shortly and have come up with a couple of problems. I would really appreciate any help if available .

Problem 1. New Burton 652c engine and new carburettor. New Burton electronic ignition compatible coil fitted; new regulator fitted. Engine ran very smoothly on installation and for some time after. However, on the Motorway back from the test and in traffic, the engine refused to idle although up to temperature. On arrival home the engine died and it seemed that all electrics stopped. On restarting everything seemed to work - apart from the idle problem which continues.

Problem 2. One of the main reasons for test failure was the lack of side repeaters. New LED lights now installed and wired in parallel to the existing indicator lights; they work correctly when in use. Today I noticed that on increasing the revs the repeaters (only) started flickering, going off again at approx idle speed.

Are the two problems related? New engine and carb seems to suggest that it has been set up properly, and I do not want to fiddle with jets at this stage. I have seen the suggestion that the alternator and/or regulator might be a problem; original alternator, fitted.

How can I test both regulator and alternator for correct working, prior to trying to track a leaky earth or poor connections? Also, any ideas concerning the poor idle?

Any help or similar experience would be very gratefully appreciated

Keith

Hi, did you also change the wire loom because I did this but the loom bought at burton was faulty same problem as you discribe there was a loose connector (Bolt and nuts) worth checking.

Yes it was a Burton loom - but it all worked before adding the repeaters. :-(
Where was your bad connection and what was its effect?
