Loss of 4th gear

I went out to Bogg Bros who know their stuff about tuning carbs. They did a great job on Quicksilver. They balanced the carbs and drilled out the jets progressively until success was achieved.
I did however have a problem when driving there. The car jumped out of 4th gear a couple of times and I pushed back into engagement. The third time it went completely and I couldn't engage the gear. I checked the gear lever at the box and I can feel the detent engaging but something seems to have come adrift inside. There are/were no nasty noises or noises of any kind when it happened or on the drive home.
Any ideas as to what has happened?
What I should look for when I take off the lid (I'll try to remember to catch the spring loaded ball!)?
Are the selector forks prone to coming loose?
