2cv Carburettor problems

Post by kgnoble » Sat Aug 21, 2021 11:42 am

Hi

I have a Burton 2cv based sports. About three years ago I replaced the engine with a Burton refurb 652cc together with a new (refurb) carburettor.

I am now having enormous problems with an inability to idle and fairly rough running at greater revs. The idle circuit screw appears to make no difference at all. Generally the fuel is running far too rich as evidenced by the spark plugs and the smell from the carb! I am going to check the float to see if there is wrong adjustment or a leak.

However, I am defeated by the problem as when first supplied everything ran well and the car has not been used much since fitting it.

Does anyone know of a 2cv specialist in Surrey, and/or has a spare carb they could lend me to see if the carburettor ultimately needs replacing.

Many thanks in advance

Keith

The first thing I would do is make sure that the needle valve is shutting off and that the float level is correct. I don’t know the spec. of the needle valves but ethanol fuel is a killer for old technology ones.

I would normally replace the needle valve as a matter of course if experiencing fuel problems. Also if your using an electronic fuel pump a Filler King (to control the pressure) is always a good idea.

As the vehicle is used only occasionally the problem could simply be the fuel.

Modern petrol just has no shelf life, it goes stale within a few weeks and if left to stand its fire capacity is diminished.
So the appearance of over-fueling on the plug colour could be more to do with lack of heat/explosion at ignition.

Drain the fuel, clean out carb and try with new supply of fuel.

With E10 fuel any day now things will get much worse.
