Rear Brake Flexible Hose

Post by Paul » Mon Dec 17, 2012 12:03 pm

Can anyone provide me with a supplier and part number for a flexible rear brake hose that would fit my three-wheeler.

The current pipe appears to be the standard Citroen with a rubber seal at each end and the pipe coiled inside the rear axle. The rear wheel cylinder is standard. The front end union is a single union that accomodates the rubber seal (not the Y-shaped type for the four wheeled car).

There's not a lot of gap between the body and the axle, so some sort of banjo bolt might be the way to go at the front connection.

Time is of the esssence; that is why it's quicker for me to fit a flexible hose rather than install a new coiled pipe in the axle tube (It'll involve cutting a hole in the body to gain access to the cover on the axle end).

Thanks for any advice.

Paul

Just make one using braided brake hose or have one made by a motor factor. If using braided you could take it from the Master Cylinder outlet if access to the union is the problem.

There you go - then get swaged flexi-pipe made up and job's done. Whereabouts are you?

Hi,

Following Geoff's suggestion, I got myself sorted out.

I got a 1.1 m braided, stainless steel, brake hose made up by Furore Products. The guy was really helpful, actually answered the phone (another company didn't even respond to e-mails or phone messages; shan't be dealing with them) and was prompt in supplying the hose with aluminium washers.

The banjo bolts turned out to be a bit of a pain. I ordered two M8 x 1.25 mm pitch banjo bolts from a company, who sent me one correct bolt and one incorrect bolt (a 1.00 mm pitch). Then it was sorry, we're shut for xmas and new year, contact us on the 2nd or 3rd January. That's no good to me as the car is entered for the MCC Exeter trial on 4th Jan. So onto e-bay and I ordered a banjo bolt in the morning and got it through the post the next day with copper washers. Not bad.

So, hose fitted, brakes bled and the car is ready to rock and roll.

Regards Paul

Glad to hear you're sorted. I had the same issue with banjo bolt threads when I first did this many years ago - it threw me that it was just a standard pitch M8. You sort of expect anything Citroen to be oddball so just plain M8 rather than M9 or M7 is a surprise - you'd at least expect it to be M8 fine or superfine...

With a soft copper washer you should have no problem getting a seal on the wheel cylinder. Ideally you'd have it machined flat on a milling machine (I had this done on the master cylinder) but 9 times out of ten a washer will do the job. Where it doesn't I have had good success with scraping the surface flat with a stanley knife blade and engineers blue.

BTW - it is possible to make the braided lines up yourself using compression type fittings with olives underneath the braiding. Useful to know if you are up against a deadline and don't have the time to wait for custom made swaged lines. I do this when I make up rocker feed oil lines.
