Gearbox stub diameter?

Post by Greylag » Tue May 28, 2013 10:52 am

Hello All,

Could anyone please tell me the diameter of the small stub which comes out of the gearbox on the disc brake version. It's the one where the pinch bolt and clamp fasten to. I've a mate who's going to modify my gear lever for me and he's asked me for this measurement and I don't have a vernier or anything similar.

Thanks in advance
Regards
Dave

The diameter of the splined part of the stick measures 10.10mm The plain portion 10.00mm
Hope this helps

Thanks Hutchi,

Strangely enough the spare gear lever I have doesn't look to be splined at all, it looks like a similar arrangement to a cotter pin on a bicycle with a clamp and bolt which looks like it would lock into a cutout.

Dave,
if the clamp has ever been left so loose that the stalk can rotate relative to the stub, the inside of the stalk eventually wears to the point where it can no longer be clamped tightly onto the splines.
The only cure is to find a stalk which hasn't suffered such damage, unless you want to put up with guessing which gear you're in...

Don't forget to check that the M7 clamp bolt is 10.9 grade, btw.

Ken

( Don't cotter pins have a flat which locates against a similar surface on the axle?
You won't find that detail on an A series gearchange mechanism.
;) )

Hey up Ken,

Aye cotter pins do have the corresponding flat but that was the only way I could try and explain how this looked. Mine is circular but the inside of the spare gear lever I have doesn't seem to have any splines. Looks like my mate will have to use the original off my trike, as far as I'm aware it should have splines but then again I haven't had it off to have a look.

Thanks all for the replies
Regards
Dave

Dave,
I'm not sure the actual gearstick (female) has splines in it. The diameters I gave originally were those of the male sticking out of the box housing, to which the tubular stick attaches via the clamp as mention by Ken. If the female is splined I've not noticed it. It may be that as the tube is relatively soft (cuts easily with a hacksaw) and the shaft is relatively hard, the clamp exerts sufficient pressure to "mark" the inside of the tube with a spline!

More than 'mark' it, the tubular stalk needs to 'grip' the stub instead of 'slip' once the clamp has been tightened... ;)
