Spark Plugs

I'm going to change the plugs in my 602cc BRA special.

Has anyone used NGK Iridium BR7 HIX plugs which I understand are OK for 2cv's and if so are there any benefits as they cost a lot more than standard plugs. Also what gap is used?

For ordinary plugs, NGK B6HS plugs seem to be the default option but B7HS and B8HS can also be used - any views on these?

Thanks, Nick

Hi Nick , I used to run on b6hs but following the advice of Ken Hanna I changed to b8hs . Result car ran much better and is still on the set fitted 5 years ago and running well. Regards Badger.

Cheers, Gordon. ;)
Nick, to obtain the full benefit of plugs with an iridium centre electrode, you'd need to swap the low tension polarity regularly when using a double-ended coil, otherwise the side electrode of the plug which is firing 'in reverse' is going to wear faster.
I may be wrong, but from checking on the internet, those NGK IX plugs use a base metal earth electrode.

The plug's heat range is just as important and, in my experience, the original specification of a '6' in NGK's range is a shade on the hot side for A series engines which have to use today's unleaded fuel.
Even for 'normal' 2CVs, I always fit NGK B7HS plugs which are one step colder than original spec, or the even colder B8HS if I know that the owner is fond of a 'pedal to the metal' style of driving...

Thanks for your replies Gordon and Ken and I'll fit a a pair of the B8HS plugs.

....and Ken my BRA had one of your chassis fitted when my car was rebuilt in 2005 and I'm very impressed with it !!

Nick

Hi all,

Just a thought but has anyone considered the NGK BP variant (Extended electrode) of the usual B6HS; that is to say BP6HS, BP7HS etc.

The theory is that the extended electrode warms up quicker and less prone to fouling etc.

I would appreciate comments...
