Higher compression pots
Hi Folks.
Is it worth fitting 9.0:1 barrel sets to a standard engine?
Will this give more grunt when using normal 95 RON unleaded? ( and even more with premium V+)
Will she run hotter?
Prob change heads at same time...
Any feed back will be most welcome.
Thanks.

Yes
A little bit
A little bit
Why not refurb them yourself?
If all is in good order why not just have 1mm taken off the bottom ledge of the pots?

Re: Higher compression pots
Thanks for the reply Geoff.
Just thinking ahead, engine knocks when warm, compression not bad, gonna pull it apart for inspection soon.
Engine been run on unleaded, and stood for 4 years. Maybe just looking at worst situation...

Re: Higher compression pots
ECAS are selling new 9 to 1 cylinders and piston sets for £110 at the moment and they run on 95RON fuel

Re: Higher compression pots
The ECAS £110 barrels and piston sets are made in Indian. ECAS say they have had no problems with them and that are well made, but who knows. They say you will get a bit more power if you up-grade to the 9 to 1 compression piston.Rob Bryant wrote:Yes, seeing them on his website is what stimulated my thoughts......
I must admit I took the chance and have purchased a set as my own engine is smoking a bit .... I was just going to replace the valve seals but decided what whilst the heads are off I had just as well replace the barrels for that sort of price.... and then hopefully everything should be sorted for good with the lowish mileage that I am likely to do.
Some say that barrels from Argentina aren't very good, but again who knows.

Re: Higher compression pots
I'm looking at rebuilding my engine over the winter, it seems to be rather flat to how I remember, it has stood for 5years or so, and brought it back to life earlier this year. The engine was dropped in 6-7 years ago but I have no history for it, I know that one head is not sealing particularly well, so was thinking of new barrels. I suppose I'm just looking for general advice. Based in the Banbury area, if I get stuck with it, is there anybody/companies in this area that could help. I would rather rebuild myself, after all if I can put world rally cars together, I should be able to manage this. Any hints an tips would be gratefully received. Oh an it's fitted in lomax 223 if that makes any difference.
Many thanks

Re: Higher compression pots
I'd fit new pistons, barrels, have the heads cleaned up and regrind the valves. This should work OK. Some jobs are a bit fiddly and need careful thought. 2CV engines may be simple but they are very quirky and you need to be careful. Good luck.Stretch wrote:I'm looking at rebuilding my engine over the winter, it seems to be rather flat to how I remember, it has stood for 5years or so, and brought it back to life earlier this year. Re: Higher compression pots
Obviously make sure you replace the plastic value guide seals and note that they are slightly different sizes for the inlet and exhaust (easy to get them muddled). Get the new piston inserted into the barrel firstly before you slide the barrels onto the engine and then fit the gudgeon pins... trying to do it the other way by insert the piston into the barrel whilst connected to the engine is very fiddly. Some use copper grease as a sealing compound when bolting the heads to the cylinders as there is no head gasket. You can bed in the cylinder heads by us an old barrel with the fins smashed off (otherwise you can't turn the barrel to bed in the head).Stretch wrote:I'm looking at rebuilding my engine over the winter, it seems to be rather flat to how I remember, it has stood for 5years or so, and brought it back to life earlier this year.
