Carburetter 12 mm Crowsfoot

Post by Paul » Fri Sep 06, 2013 6:08 pm

Hi,
This homemade 12 mm, 1/4 in drive crowsfoot might be of interest to anyone who's having problems removing the carburetter nuts with standard tools.

It consists of the 12 mm ring from a combination spanner and a 1/4 in socket (9 mm in this case, but so long as it's slim any size will do. I ground down the end of the socket to the same angle as the remaining end of the spanner, then welded the two together. Ignore the welding; I know it looks like a dog s**t weld, but I don't get enough practice with my MIG welder. Structurely sound, but aesthetically, well, leaves something to be desired.

I had to grind the periphery of the ring because the ring was fouling a boss on the carburetter, but it'll fit all four nuts unless they've been rounded off by the previous use of an open end spanner.

I believe you can probably buy an off the shelf crowsfoot, but when I looked, they seemed pretty expensive for the amount of use it would get.

Regards Paul

in france here are " pipe spanners" , in all sizes up to lorry big stuff down to tiny ..
as the name describes ,one end is curved over at 90 degrees and the threaded bit passes up the tube or through the bend..so very versatile- in a similar way to the excellent carb spanner.
Some are 6 sided nut edged, others are multi cornered for versatility...
I have a tool roll of pipes to complement a spanner tool roll and portable rachet set...in the car..

I made a cheapish ring/open end spanner fit by heating it with oxy/propane and putting a "?" shaped bend in it. The VW Beetle needed a similar 13mm ring to get to the forward inlet manifold nut.
I'd send a pic but it's on loan to a 2CV owner... that reminds me, I must ask for its return.
