Oil cooler hoses - I've sprung a leak!

Post by Highwaylass » Sun Apr 06, 2014 6:36 pm

Hello, I'm new to Lomaxes (but not 2CVs) and may have made a schoolboy error...

I took the oil cooler off to get an easier run at the points box.

Now the joints between the flexy hose and the "stumps" on the engine are weeping.

Should I try nipping the jubilee clips up tighter? One of the stump pipes has already become oval, presumably from being squashed by the clip.

Any advice gratefully received!

Sheila

If the jubilee clips have caused the stub to go oval it sounds like the clips, are too large I.e. The flat side of the worm area is too large/flat causing distortion.

My advice would be to use a proper, correctly sized, "hose clip", the type with a nut and bolt on the outside, rather than a worm clip. The screw mechanism design of a Jubilee type clip makes it almost impossible for the clip to remain round when the sizes get small. The hose clips described, provide a much more unifirm clamp without distorting the hose. Readily available on the net or from stores like Halfords.
IMO they also look much neater too! :)

when you consider the pressure -especially at cold start up, unless the jubilee clips are really well on, you might get a hose popping off..not good as it makes a mess of both driveway and engine.

I'm going to get some hoses made with proper crimped ends. Then all i will have to worry about is the leak from the bottom of the push rod tubes

Hi. I've had the same issue with mine. Sorted it in the end by using two clips on each tube, it not pretty but it works. What I'd like to do is what your going to do, but I've no idea where to get the hoses made up(or the sizes)so any help would be very greatly received.

Cheers Dave

I've secured my bottom hose with two jubilee clips, and then wired from the clip to a bolt head, so the hose doesn't move under pressure

Any Tractor repair shop will have facilities to make up hose at a good price. If you take in the fittings they will identify the threads and put on appropriate ends. If you're stuck I will dig out the details for you.

Pay a bit extra and get swivel ends - it will make life much easier.
