Clutch & other issues (oil leaks). Advice required please!

Post by Jimmy Cooper » Sun Oct 19, 2014 10:10 pm

Had an oil leak from the rear crankshaft seal ever since I bought the 223 six months ago. Not too bad, but annoying on a friend's driveway etc.
So ordered a double lip rear seal to be on the safe side and pulled the engine today. Having never done the job before from opening the workshop door to engine out was only 40 minutes. Impressed me with how simple it was!!!
Anyway, once flywheel was removed I looked immediately at the seal. Looked fine with no oil trace. Then thought I'd check the oil pump cover 'O' ring gasket. Well the bolts holding the cover were just finger tight. I spun them off with a socket in my fingers!!!! There's the leak then.

Anyway, the clutch has always rattled when the clutch pedal is depressed from cold. Fine once pedal lifted or when engine warm.
The rivets on my clutch plates are a tiny bit loose I feel; so these need tightening.
Now I was given a full Valeo 2CV clutch kit a while back but it is different from the one I have just removed. Mine fits flush with the flywheel (which weighs 7.1 Kg or 15.6 lbs) whereas the new one doesn't!
So, what's normal? Is my flywheel standard? Reading the bits in John Nash's "It's not a Mouse but a Lion" he states the standard flywheel weighs 9.45Kg or 20.79 lbs so mine must have been lightened. Do the pictures prove that?
Also, the pressure plate has fine machined grooves on the clutch plate side. Only ever seen 'flat' ones before so a new one on me.
All information gratefully received!!!

Jimmy,
that flywheel is a heavy/coil spring type, however the clutch which was fitted to it is an aftermarket 'crossover' type; those only appeared long after production of 2CVs had ended.

The clutch you've been given is to suit the later (lighter) flywheel, so won't fit your flywheel.
I'd guess that the gearbox is 'short spline' type, to match the heavy flywheel...

I wouldn't worry too much about the surface finish of the pressure plate; those grooves will polish out with use.
More to the point, have you fitted new flywheel bolts, or are you going to risk re-using the old ones?

Ken
( p.s. Yes, that flywheel has had a fair chunk of metal removed off its outer face, can't see the engine side though. ;) )

Thanks Ken,
Flywheel bolts. I have only removed them so far so wasn't thinking about that re-fit yet. They look OK but of course I don't have metallurgical X-ray eyes!
Will see about getting some new ones then.
