Brush Painting

Post by Geoff Ryall-Harvey » Tue May 07, 2013 7:18 pm

Nice to meet some CSC members at Stoneleigh on Sunday. I promised to supply some information on the paint I used for the chassis and running gear of my Avion. It is a tekaloid made by Craftsmaster Paints. I will be using it to paint the bodywork of my Model T and I am expecting to get a fine finish. The secret is preparation, application and good brushes. It is vastly cheaper than spraying but you can expect to spend a lot more time to get a top quality finish.

I'm happy to answer any questions about its use. Like anything, there is a plus side and a minus side. But, if you put in the time and effort you can repaint your car for around £50 at home. Realistically, it will cost an absolute minimum of twenty times that to have it sprayed.

Hello Geoff,

As a youth I was apprenticed to a painting and decorating firm and funnily enough a bloke there had brush painted an MG Midget in British Racing Green you wouldn't have believed it was brushed. I asked him what he used and I remember it was "Swansdown" enamel it can be done and as you say it's a damn sight cheaper than having it sprayed.

Regards
Dave

Dave - all the paint goes on the job. There's no overspray and you often don't have to tear everything apart as you do for spraying.

I used Tekaloid on a couple of BMW 250 motorcycles I restored, a pleasure to use, and easy to touch up damaged paintwork.
