Solex Carb - Float height

Post by Steve Keohane » Sun Aug 26, 2012 8:56 am

Hi all,

Whilst reading old posts on Solex carbs I came accross this Discussion:

Ken you advised Callum:

Callum,
use 15mm or 'just' under.
That's worked with every carb to which I've fitted Mikuni jets during the last 15 years or thereabouts.

18-26 or 21-24 makes no difference, the float assembly is the same for both types.

Might also be worthwhile checking that the floats are sitting centrally in their respective bowls, especially the n/s one, which is the one that will be causing your problem...

Can you please expand on the 15mm height recommendation - does it apply to a Solex with std jets?

Many thanks,

Steve

Steve,
I was fitting a primary mikuni jet to the 21-24 carb and had run into countless problems with the floats sticking in the chamber. Either the carb would flood within a few seconds, and run out of fuel, typically about 200yds from my house (I know exactly how far I can drive on a bowlfull of fuel now).

The problem is that the mikuni carb doesn't recess into ints housing like the solex one does. Setting the float height that much higher would allow movement of the float without it binding on the body of the jet.

Hi Callum,

Thanks for the update. I will stick with 18mm.

Callum,
if you have a peep at Fig 2.18 in Chapter 2 of Haynes, that drawing shows the earliest version of a Solex 26/35 carburettor, in which the heads of both primary and secondary main jets projected into the float bowls. ;)
The Mikuni jets have almost exactly the same dimensions as those larger Solex jets...
