Information Request 123 Electronic Ignition

Post by yesnosorry » Tue Jan 07, 2014 3:27 pm

Information request please, is anyone able to tell me which of the 123 electronic ignition replacements is most suitable for the 2CV 602cc Engine,
as I understand there are 3 types,
123/2CV, 123/UNI & the 123/EVO at varying prices.
My Lomax engine is standard at the moment but may tune later on.

yesnosorry,
I use the DG ignition also and no problems, it uses the standard 2CV coil as well.

Hi Lester,

This subject is also covered in the old forum, see http://pub41.bravenet.com/forum/static/ ... 9&cmd=show

My understanding is that the DG systems replace the contact breakers, but still require the bob weights to provide an advance/retard function. The 123 systems do not require the bob weights since the advance/retard function is performed electronically. The more expensive 123/EVO system allows you to programme the electronics and also has a vacuum advance.

I looked into this some time ago and would fit the 123/2CV sytem were it not for the adverse reliability concerns. Can anyone supply their experiences with the 123 systems, good or bad?

Regards Paul

Hi again, a bit more info on the DG... NOTE: Disconnect the battery first. the DG unit replaces everything including the bob weights and condenser, 2 small magnets are pushed onto the pins where the bob weights normally pivot, the DG unit is bolted on using the 2 timing bolts. Connect up, remove the spark plugs, turn the engine over and push your timing rod though the crankcase into the flywheel re-connect the battery then switch on the ignition. Turn the DG until the light comes on turn the other way and at the point where the light goes off, turn back until the light just comes on and lock the bolts. Put the plugs back in and that's it...

I have heard too many concerns about the 123 system, the main problem being that on the more exposed Lomax they appear to sometimes fill with water. The DG does not seem to suffer from this problem, presumably more waterproof. There was also an issue with the 123 system being too far advanced and causing overheating. I think this has been sorted on the newer models but I personally would not buy an older second hand version.

I've got a Lumenition system on my Lomax as this seems to be the preferred option for the racing type 2CV engine as it is more
tunable.

There seems to be a bit of a bias away from 123 by the current posters, so I'm going to come to its defence.

I've been running vanilla 123 since 2006 and have no problems with it. It's protected behind a cowled engine, so not quite as exposed as on a Lomax for instance. It fires the engine first time every time. No problems with pinking. Since fitting it, I have never been in to retime it or fiddle with it at all. It really is fit-and-forget.

I'm also running a car on standard points with a Boyer Bransden unit - inherited after buying some engines. I quite like this, as I can swap back to 'standard' setup by unplugging and replugging two wires. Of course, the original advance mechanism is employed, and cam wear will require this setup to be adjusted from time to time. Also, for the techie in me, I get two flashy lights in the cigarette packet-sized box mounted in a stainless holder - nice!

Callum - I use the Boyer Brandsen with twin 6v coils in series. Very cheap & reliable set up. I like that it does away with the need for a condensor. I leave a good condensor in the loop though and I have a jumper wire to return it all to stock in the unlikely event that the BB fails.

I am using the same unit on my 57 Pontiac big block engine.

Hi
My main reason for changing to electronic ignition is reliability also no maintenance required, when its set its set.
It sounds like the DG System is the most favoured with no adverse comments.
Thank you all for your Input.
