It's easy enough to remove the head and leave the barrel and piston in place (remove the rockers first) and then stick a finger down the cam follower guide and pull it out, but I would have thought that replacing the cam follower with a new one will only lead to similar issues unless you address the real problem - a worn camshaft.

How do you know the cam follower is worn.

As mentioned about, I personally would not replace the cam followers without replacing the cam.

If you just want to get it back on the road ASAP - I'd look for a good second-hand engine and rebuild your current engine to a high standard as time and budget allows.

I have adjusted the one tappet twice, there is play again, the rockers are good, the pushrod is of equal length, there is a slight noise from the cam follower which fades with less tappet noise, [ rotational ] and then returns.

When you say play again do you mean the clearance has increased I suspect it's not the cam followers. Assuming your adjusting the valves correctly if your clearance is increasing pull the pushrods out and I think you will find one of the caps loose

Indeed, that's a known problem, luckily only found on very late engines.
It's the pushrod tip or end which works loose, becoming progressively worse until you run out of adjustment on the rocker.
It's always the top end, so easy to spot...
