Lomax l colour matching . Light blue Range

Post by Portuguy » Thu Jul 03, 2014 12:40 am

Hi i wonder if anyone can help me define the light blue colour used on Lomaxes ? Does it have a name and or a number usually ? " Bluebell "needs a tidy up .( ive just aquired this vehicle two weeks ago ) shes been lying in storage for a while but has had only had one carefull owner in 19 years .
She had been sucking up oil but now runs better ( was heavily misfiring ) since new plugs and an air filter clean . Is it advisable to replace the breather valve or can this be cleaned ( whereever it is ? ) the oil filler unit has been fitted to the bulkhead with i think extra long tubes . The carb was black inside and i plan to use carb cleaner unless advised otherwise . Then i would choose one of the electronic ignition options that doesnt require too many other changes . Ie the simplest to fit . Any advice here ?
Thanks Aidan

The very light blue could be Anchusa blue as this was very popular gel coat colour..

Re breather valve; if it is a standard item it is in the oil filler unit. The unit is sealed, the valve is a rubber sleeve inside an inner steel tube and cannot be replaced. it is normally fitted directly on top of the crankcase. If it has been moved to the bulkhead, that's OK I've see them relocated all over the place and still work OK. If the carb is black inside could be caused by oil from the breather. Better to replace the breather unit. If the breather valve is not working correctly it can all sorts of oil related problems.

I am pretty sure that David Low told me once that all the gelcoat colours that Lomax used were 'RAL' colours. These are a sort of 'British Standard' colour range, used for gelcoat and possibly printing inks too. If you can work out which 'RAL' colour you have, in theory you should be able to order it from an industrial GRP materials supplier. However, what is on the car might have changed through the action of sunlight over the years.
