Has anybody used the tap on the king pin lower plug houising

Post by mptbowl59 » Wed Aug 27, 2014 3:20 pm

Hi I'm new to this forum. I don't have a 'special' but I do have a 2cv which I've had as a sole car for the past 18 years. I,ve replaced my king pins loads of times and am looking for a little advice. I think due to the poor quality of the machining, the bushes having play in them from brand new, that I have had to replace them so many times. Actually the pins 2cv city are selling at the moment are best I've used since 1997. Anyway what I would like to ask is " has anybody used the tap to clean up the thread for that pesky plug to screw in to"? I think, finally, I have the king pin scene under control except for that thread. Would it be worth my while getting one of those taps or is it just as difficult to clean the old thread up as it is trying to get the plug to thread in, I actually got so peeved and was running out of time before the MOT that I smacked it in with a hammer and put a blob of weld on it. Once I have this worked out I will only replace the bottom bush through the top as I am sure putting it though the bottom like I have been doing is what has caused all the agro. From what I can see from the photo of the tap, there is no lead in so you would have to be very accurate to clean up the old thread without cross threading so if anyone has any first hand knowledge of this I would be grateful.
I look forward to your advice
kind regards Michael

Use this tap for years. No troubles, only satisfaction. Beware some new parts may be fault. Tested lots of kingpins and never found the perfect one, would like to buy pin, bushes, cap, ... by different sellers.

Michael,
when other folk have run out of patience and hammered a lower plug into position, I've usually found that it's 'game over' for that hub carrier.
Adding a blob of weld won't have helped much either, but perhaps that modification intended to deal with those instances where the recess for the Welch plug has been rendered incapable of sealing grease might help bring it back into service?

FWIW, I've been dealing with ECAS for over 30 years, I have fitted hundreds of kingpins supplied by them and never had a faulty set... ;)
