Gearbox whine in third

Post by Portuguy » Mon Oct 13, 2014 9:46 pm

Since replacing the main shaft synchro unit with another from another box , there is a terrible whine in third before it jumps out after 50 - 100 meters . I think during the refitting one original ball bearing flew out and got lost in garage debris , and another was substituted . However we will make a small adjustment to third with the top open . Would it be a good idea to use an additive to help the replacement synchro shaft mate with the original parts or reduce whine ? Or is it a job for locktite on the bearings ?
Thanks Aidan

I'm no expert on these 'boxes, but if it is whining and jumping out of gear then I'd assume an alignment issue? That would be where maybe the gear is running off-line to where it normally does/should be. Also, sometimes worn gears take on a pattern such that adding another worn gear from another box creates other new noises. Had that on motorcycles before.
Also, are you SURE the ball bearing flew out into the garage debris? Not in the casing is it?

Good luck whatever!!!!

Ive got a clue as to the third jumping out . The synchro main shaft was taken out an unknown gearbox ,which so happened to be a Dyane box and fitted into my 2cv box .My answer was to send the dyane box from Portugal to a well known gearbox guru in Yeovil . May sound a bit extreme , but i i was getting out my depth . Its a job for an expert as ive found out. Through reading all the paperwork from previous owner who sadly died this year, i realise my Lomax233 was the first of its kind to be imported into Portugal 20 years ago. It took a lot of paperwork to get it re registered and on the road. I bought it without having seen it since briefly 20 years ago from the family . Now various club members are helping me sort out its problems for which im very grateful .
Id love to chat to its first owner if hes still kicking a Mr AC Fenwell from Aylesbury Bucks HP 21 9DH.
If anyone has any information about him please let me know .
Thanks for reading this
Regards to all Aidan
