Coil

Post by gillmax » Sun Oct 19, 2014 10:05 am

I have a 123 Ignition system fitted to my 223. The 123 brochure is saying that if you use other than a Ducellier or Femsa coil it will probably damage the system. Can anyone tell me if this is the case and if so, where do I obtain either or from? Any advice would be appreciated as I am a new member.

Yes - it is true. I melted all the solder out of a 123 unit using twin Ford coils. It is absolutely fine with a standard coil of whatever make. Suitable coils are available from 2CV City or other 2CV specialists.

The Harley coil is ok with 123 as well. I have both on my 2cv. I suspect the generic black motorbike coils on ebay are as well, I have one on my Ami, but with normal points and it is fine. Or ECAS now do a solid state coil which you could check with them but I am sure that it would be ok.

Of course, what really matters is the resistance of the coil's primary winding, not what make it may happen to be.
An original Citroen coil was around 3.5 ohms, anything up to 5 ohms will work fine.

If you decide to try a pair of coils, make sure that you know how to work out their combined resistance, both in parallel and series... ;)

From 123's site, it appears that later versions of 123 can cope with a lower resistance coil, such as the type used on the 652 Visa.
Only problem is that the units don't seem to be marked with any indication to show their date of manufacture, which would be needed to determine their suitability, so best to play safe?

I've been told that a Harley coil is a good replacement to the Citroen unit - does the Harley unit have a part number? Many thanks.
