Tickover problems
Hi, I've got a probs with engine cutting out on stopping and changing down it happens after 10/15 mins run blown out slow running jet start engine ticks over like a clock 10/15 run same again clean carb and all jets another run same prob again so now this prob is telling me it's to do with time/temp fault so now I don't touch anything but let the engine stand for about 2hrs then it starts up and ticks over like a clock take for a run same againx2 the car is now on sorn for the winter so any ideas I can check for next season, it a lomax 223 602 engine Ecas super coil with points, new pump, filter, and petrol pipe, plugs fitted last year, this fault has just started last month up to then it has run with no probs and I haven't done/ fitted anything to engine up to the fault, cheers Mel.. (Ps I have C&Guilds1'2'3' in motor veh technology so be as technical as you like)

Re: Tickover problems
Hi,you do not need to be over technical with these 2cv engines! All you need is a patient nature and a stubborn streak! You are going to find that this fault is probally a bad electrical connection or a dirty one! The first suspect is the back of the ignition switch or the coil connections. The number of times over the years that I have had this or similar fault and have gone through the routine of take it off clean it ,put it back,is no odds to any body, never actualy finding a fault but it goes away! The original coils used to be the worse offender but as you have the supercoil, that should be fine! Good Luck Graham.

Re: Tickover problems
Or maybe check the valve clearances, since the symptoms you've described fit with insufficient clearances?
With unleaded fuel, it's best to set them a shade wider than Citoen's original recommendation, especially for the exhaust valves.
The rocker covers should come off at every oil change anyway to drain the last of the old oil and also remove any sludge which may have collected in that 'settling' area inside the covers, so it's not much extra work to dig out the feeler gauges...
A 0.25mm loose fit for the exhausts and 0.25mm sliding fit for the inlets works fine for me.

Re: Tickover problems
Well, I have had two issues like this but with motorbikes (but the 2CV engine is like a BMW Boxer engine anyway).
First was a coil that warmed up and the insulation I assume broke down as it gave a slight misfire. I think not in your case though with the ECAS coil.
The other one drove me mad and took me a long time to find (OK, several days). It was a spark plug that warmed up and lost compression around the ceramic/metal seal. Just enough to ruin the slow running. Cold it was fine. It always sparked on the block too when checking it. So I'd try two new plugs as a cheap way to eliminate one potential issue. Good luck with the huntin' the problem down!!!

Re: Tickover problems
Hi just an update on engine cutting out at junctions etc, set valve clearances to .25mm and took 223 on good run/thrash today (first time out since last Oct)around the houses for 40min with lots of stops and engine did not stop once so "thank you" Ken Hanna for spot on advice engine sounds like a bag of nails now but I don't care as long as it keeps running at junctions and the impatient driver behind is not trying to drive overthe top of me in his SUV lol...ps I drive a SUV..lol.

Re: Tickover problems
Melboy,
I had the same problem. I t turned out to be the coil breaking down when hot. I changed to a sports coil and no more problems.

Re: Tickover problems
Hi I fitted an ecas supercoil 8years ago when I first had the lomax, just been going over manifold / carb nuts and bolts ,run engine on tick over for 30min after and not miss a beat and it was piping hot, 6 mile drive next week to mot station.
