Rain Gutter

Post by QFAD » Thu Nov 27, 2014 2:12 pm

Hi all,

I was wandering how folks prevented rain washing over the scuttles underneath the Brookland screens? I have seen rubber used to blank-off the space beneath the screen, so I am thinking along the lines of some form of beading/edging type arrangement (appreciate suggestions) to deflect the rain. I may even invest in new screens mounted on plinths (John Kimble) as part of the solution.

Thanks in adavnce,

Steve

PS I already have a St/St bath plug to let the water out of the cockpit! :lol:

Steve - love the bath plug idea ;-)

I have the John Kimble ones mounted on plinths and that works very well. I also have a canoe spraydeck style tonneau on my Avion which helps a lot.

Back in the day many cars would have a rubber or a leather skirt that went from the bottom of the AeroScreen to the scuttle like this;

That would be very easy to do. Silicon rubber sheet is cheap and easily available on eBay. The bottom of the screen could be drilled and tapped at M3 to secure the rubber. You can make it as high or low as you need and it can be trimmed to fit the curvature of the Lomax scuttle.

Slightly more complex would be to make a fibreglass moulding (or adapt a car spoiler maybe) - this is what has been done with the Buckland;

Still leaves a bit of a gap though....

I've seen people with towels there which they have used for years, if you wanted a cheap option.

Hi Mendip Wursel,

A very practicable solution - but not quite what I had in mind ;)

I will keep looking for a more visually pleasing solution.

Cheers all.

Hi Portuguy,

I guess you have had your moneys worth. Also all that sunshine (UV) must wreak havoc with rubber.

I have purchased two screens with plinths fro John Kimble and these will provide the mounting for aluminium strips - to fix a piece between the plinths and two pieces to run down to the mirrors on both sides. I will top with a rubber bead to finish them off; I reckon they will do the job and look good.

Much cheaper to buy them direct from John Kimble.
