Kingpin greasing

Post by howardjs » Sun Jan 10, 2016 3:40 pm

While Googling around I came across this post on the Citroen Car Club website
http://www.citroencarclub.org.uk/drupal ... 08636c2415
Seeing as the upper bush on my kingpin was worn and dry even though it had received regular greasing I made a pair up to give it a try. (seals not shown in the photo).
Has anyone else tried it?

Great idea. Worth doing while I am working in that area and on the build stand.

I fitted a similar arrangement to my Avion when I built the car, the Citroen setup just didn't seem a good engineering solution to me! Tony Mellor Blackjack Avion No 56.

Tony - at some point I plan to alter the castor angle on my car. When I do that I will have the arms and hubs bored to take a larger kingpin (Ford Pop?) and do something about the top and bottom plugs - maybe using O rings.

I wonder if Steve Parrish has a solution?

the only problem I have had with the original fitting is the top tap in Welch plug (probably the wrong word) leaking stopping the pressure build up required to get the grease in to the bushes but with a little seam sealer/ exhaust paste etc in place before fitting the top plug the problem is solved.
But by all means do your own thing because that's the fun of self build :D

I had the same problem and used a smear of body filler to the same end.

Grease sealing system installed... Pumped in grease, gun came to an abrupt halt, another slow pump on the very tight gun lever... very slight escape of grease from the inner knuckle hinge faces... NO grease escaping from the end caps bottom or top.... Total success... :D

Now I can reassemble the arms back on the car along with my redesigned (not 2CV) track rod ends.... But that's another story.. ;)

A good result then out of couriosity which wire wheels and adapters do you intend to use. Are you going the pembleton route?

Howard,
With the setup you've got, there's going to be unsufficient clearance between the bottom of the kingpin assembly and the inner wheel rim.
Are you intending to shorten the stud or recess the nut any?

Callum, The end of the screw stud will be shortened to eliminate the exposed threads from corroding, however it does fit a wire wheel setup (15") as is. see pic.
If used on a steel wheel then it would need to be shortened anyway.

BTW Your Scotland Frozen North's weather has just arrived in here tropical Cheshire...my workshop heater can't even keep itself warm...can you get Nicy to send us some of your surplus gas? Or a barrel of malt...
Cheers Howard
