Three wheels to Four

Post by djmagee » Fri Feb 05, 2016 10:09 am

I built my 223 (Bertie) 20 years ago and he has been much used and loved. I have long wondered what would be the implications of adding a fourth wheel (converting to 224) in terms of SVA etc.... Any advise gratefully received thanks. David Magee

Sounds a nightmare to me - from a number of aspects! I think you would need SVA - why not ask DVLA direct what they would require? If you are set on four wheels it would be easier to sell your 223 and buy a 224.

Thanks Tom, that's pretty much what I expected to hear. Bertie is not negotiable so I will keep an eye out for a registered 224 to play about with. I have followed my good friends Gary and Becky Shearing for sooooo many miles in their their beautifully sorted 224 over the past 20 years, and discussed it with him so many times, that I know I must try a 224 at some point. In the mean time , happy trike days. David

Easier to go five;

Not sure what the two outside rear wheels do... if anything.

I have a friend who converted his motorcycle to a Trike many years ago. He then wanted to bring it back to being a solo motorcycle. Surprisingly there was very little hassle from the DVLA because it had already been registered as a solo bike and the frame hadn't been altered. No special vehicle inspection was needed. The insurance company wasn't too worried either as it was a old trike/bike on classic insurance.

Especially if you have the vehicle's documented history, perhaps you should just ask the DVLA :?:

p.s. I'd personally suggest you do try a 224 before you commit to altering your 3-wheeler.. you might not like it so much. Parking for example is so much easier without rear wheels sticking out like a prince's ears :lol:

I would guess they had minimal grip with that center wheel, certainly different

Here's where I upset the apple cart.
I bought a 223 specifically because it had 3 wheels. I think the four wheeled cars look as it they should have yellow & red panels as they look like "Noddy" cars. Think it is the way the rear wheel arches seem too far back. Just my opinion eh? I suppose it is that in my "youf" I saw the Morgan three wheelers at the Goodwood track and loved the look of 'em.
But, each to their own and I'm sure there are great reasons to have a four wheeler................if you have a mate called Big Ears perhaps.....LOL. No offence intended. :D
