I wonder if someone can help and give me a definitive answer. I have replaced the flywheel after a fair amount of dismantling. This was some time ago and I now realise I did not try to line up the flywheel in its original position and thereby ensuring the hole was back in the correct position.
Is there only one position for the flywheel to be remounted, or is the timing hole now useless for me?
If I try to set the timing statically without the hole, can I do it by testing for TDC (presumably with both valves closed) and then counting a number of teeth back?
As I am fitting a new 123 electronic ignition, is the timing hole position still relevant.
Any answers would be greatly appreciated - while I kick myself for not removing and replacing the flywheel correctly in the first place!
Many thanks
Keith

Re: Timing and flywheel hole
Keith,
The flywheel is located in only one position by a dowel on the end of the crankshaft. It can only be fitted correctly.
The timing hole is ideal to get the engine running, but ideally, you should stick a test indicator down the bore, measure TDC and start teeth counting!
Making up a little pointer to sit over the flywheel and then marking the rim with TDC, 8 degrees BTDC, Full Advance and the dwell position would then allow you to dynamically time it on a strobe.

Re: Timing and flywheel hole
Thanks Callum
That is reassuring - I can now get started on the timing and seeing if the thing will actually start.
Talk soon
Best wishes
