QFAD SU HIF38

Post by QFAD » Sun May 29, 2016 6:48 pm

Hi all,

I thought would give a brief update on the HIF38 conversion.

I'm running an AAC needle with SU dashpot oil and I'm very pleased with the results. The engine ticks over smoothly and is pulling cleanly with no flat spots. The mixture is still running slightly rich so for the fine tuning I have booked a slot on a rolling road with a mini HIF38 specialist. They have been very responsive to my enquiries and seem keen/interested in tuning the HIF to suit the 2CV engine - as Nigel off-handly puts it 'we can sort you out'.

So I should soon be able to report some HP/Torque data and the needle finally selected. All in all I'm very pleased with the SU carb - and I've learnt a hell of a lot in the process.

Just been for a wonderful drive around South Wiltshire/North Dorset and I have to say the countryside is looking beautiful - If we could guarantee the sunshine we would not need to cross the channel!

I'm a very happy chap! :D

Re Your SU HIF set up...Very interesting, would you consider writing a short technical piece on this topic for Flat Out?

Hi all,

Rolling road outcome is: 34 BHP @ 4944 and 40 lbft (54.2 Nm) torque @ 4178.

The SU needle had to be profiled on a lathe as no standard needle suited.

The torque is really noticeable on the road. :D

Would like to see a photo of the SU in situ. I run a solex in my 223 which is fine except just above tickover. Cool weather amplifies the effect. Am using a crossbox but the manifold hotspot is not used. I have a rebuilt SU, but no suitable manifold that fits under the bonnet.

Regards, Bob, Chippenham

OOOOH can't wait. Yes please tell all particularly the needle mod info...
Regards Howard
P.S If anyone else has alterative carb stories (SU HIF, SU HS, Webber, Dellorto, Bing, Amal, Zenith CD etc. etc.) I think they would make good and interesting reading here or in Flat Out. Were they an improvement or a waist of time..? All info very interesting.
