Solex carbs

Post by patrickhowell » Thu Jun 09, 2016 10:40 am

Can someone please help me identify the model of Solex carburettor on my 1975 based 2CV, chassis no.01.JC.9305, engine no. 084068206? The only markings I can see are 12M... and a serial number. It has an oval intake. I'd post a photo, but the website tells me it's too large.

According to my Peter Russek manual, it should be a Solex 34 PCIS 6 but marked 123. There is no mention of a 12M.

Further to above. Russek is wrong. My 76 2cv6 has a 26/35 CSIC SCIC twin choke (hence oval inlet). Haynes has the details right.

I sent photos to ECAS, whose information leads to identification as a 24-21. It's not helpful that Solex also seem to use letters as well as numerals (see previous posts) which makes one wonder if we are discussing the same item!

Patrick,
are you sure that your engine number doesn't start with '048', which would make it a Dyane or Ami engine? (M28 type, 9.0:1 compression ratio)
A 2CV engine plate starts with '050', denoting an M28/1 engine with 8.5:1 compression ratio.

That probably explains why it's fitted with the 21-24 version of the Solex 26/35 carburettor, which was not introduced on 2CVs until July 1978.

Since the smaller of the two numbers denotes the diameter of the primary venturi, my preference when distinguishing between the various versions of the 26/35 is to list the primary venturi first, hence 21-24, 18-26 and 21-26 for the one used on 652cc Visa engines.

It seems that there are many cars running around exhibiting 'grandad's axe' syndrome...

Ken

Ken
You are entirely right, sorry, the engine number got transposed, and is 0484068206.I believe it was an Ami 8, though I'm not up on these engines.
'Grandad's axe'? That's a new one to me, even though I am a granddad, and would like to wield one on occasion....Patrick

Granda's axe must be similar to Thor's hammer. Been in the family for generations, had 3 new shafts and 4 new heads but it's original...
