Connecting a replacement oil cooler

Post by markgallagher1951 » Thu Jun 16, 2016 11:36 pm

Help please. I need to replace the oil cooler on my Lomax. The current 2CV cooler has shortened pipes that connect to the engine block with flexible braided hoses. The connection between hose and cooler is by a compression fitting. Was this a standard modification and if so what compression fittings were used?

Hi Mark,

It could well be std Lomax fitting, but photo of front of car is too small to see clearly.

However as a guide if it is std fitting (last 10 years) the braided flex hoses could be either size 6 (3/8" bsp) or size 8 (1/2" bsp).
Either way there should then be an adaptor from bsp to 10mm compression.

The size 6 hose is OK for Std Citroen cooler.
The size 8 hose option not only suits the Citroen cooler but allows the option to upgrade to a larger Mocal cooler.

My 2cents.

The pipes on the 2CV oil cooler are o.d. 10mm.
Fitted a standard 10mm Brass compression, See photos.
However "Not tested" on an engine, as I found another cooler in the shed!

2CV engines have quite a high oil pressure?????, so if you try the mod, beware of leaks

Looks to be a -6 (AN6). Hydraulic fittings are numbered by how many 16ths they are

4 (AN4) is 4/16ths or 1/4
6 is (AN6) 6/16ths or 3/8
8 is (AN8) 8/16ths or 1/2

From the image it looks like standard 10mm compression to -6 BSP have been used. Then a braided hose with -6 fittings has been used.

if you can, try to avoid getting BSPT (tapered) fittings and get BSPP (parallel). Tapered ones create swarf when you do them up, and each time they are tightened, loosened, you grind a bit away each time, plus they are slightly more likely to undo under vibration, plus you get slightly less thread engagement. Basically they're just not as good....

I'll get off my soapbox now
