Leaking rocker cover gaskets

Post by Mick Boon » Sat Apr 01, 2017 6:26 am

I took my 2CV Lomax 224 for it's first drive yesterday, it went really well but I noticed an oil smell. When I arrived back home I could see lot's of oil had been leaking from the drivers side head gasket, and quite a bit from the other side too. My car came with spare rocker cover gaskets, the original type and new Burton ones, I replaced the gaskets with the Burton gaskets...... I notice that it's still leaking a little bit but it's nowhere near as bad as it was, but I'm not happy with any oil leak .

Is this something I will have to live with or is there a fix ?

I presume yours has the aluminium valve covers in which case put some wet/dry sandpaper on some glass and rub your covers on it till the contact area is flat

Hi Mick,

What type of rocker covers do you have?

Are they the standard later 2cv jellymould type?

I've never had a problem with cork gaskets on my early aluminium rocker covers. I think most people use a smear of gasket glue or jointing compound on the rubber gaskets to get a really good seal. Its a bit like a silicone sealant.

It has the standard jelly mold covers. I will get some gasket goo and try that.

I tightened up the cover nut's a bit and that did the job, no more leaking.

My Rocker gaskets are leaking too.Ive got the Lomax aluminium type covers . I noticed on you tube rocker cover gaskets being fitted to Lomax covers and they had what looked like a double flange on the rubber . I fancy these type gaskets but where can i get them and do they have a name ? I will sand down the covers ive got .
Thanks ,Aidan .

Yep, the Burton ones are the business and work really well in my experience. :D
