Towing dolly

Post by tomnorth » Sat Dec 21, 2019 8:01 pm

Has anyone any experience of towing a Lomax 223 or similar with a towing dolly with the two front wheels supported. Someone has suggested to me the rear wheel will slew.

Tomnorth,
I believe that towing dollies are not allowed nowadays, they were used to recover cars in the old days but fell out of favour.
I believe that they are illegal...but then someone will come up with the opposite.

The use of A tow bars is also illegal, although there are people on this site who use them, but they must conform to towing regs and therein lies a problem.

Go the safe route, buy a trailer and get three wheel off the road, much easier to tow and Mr Plod will not bother you. Also you insurer will be happy as you will be towing a recognise item on the road.

I have kept this photo of a very nice small trailer for a 3 wheeler on file, as I might build something similar to supplement the much wider trailer I currently use.
it might provide inspiration to others.

The Morgan trailer looks interesting but it presumably would need the Lomax to be reversed on? Personally I would have considerable difficulty with this. I do not find it easy to reverse my Lomax 223 accurately. My trailer is more conventional and tilts to aid loading.

Vyv,
There appears to be a winch on the Morgan trailer, as per my own trailer below.
As loaded trailer is below 750kg brakes are not required when being towed by a suitable car.

Yes, winching it on should be easy enough. I drive my Lomax onto my unbraked trailer, either hitched or free standing.

Is there any real danger having it stand free at all?
These rangefinder binoculars feel just right and work like a charm.

I place chocks front and back of each trailer wheel. Absolutely safe like that. I garage the car on the trailer like this, driving on and off every time I use the car.

However, the trailer tilts, so the rear end is touching the ground when wound down. I think the same would work on a fixed trailer with the jockey wheel wound right down.
