Started this the Lomax this afternoon, went to back it out of the garage when it jumped out of reverse and made terrible grinding noises when I tried to re-engage reverse gear.
All the forward gears appear to be fine.
Could it be the dreaded "unwound gearbox"
If it is, I do not have the necessary mechanical skills or equipment to rectify the problem.
Does any one know of a mechanic in the South Warwickshire area who maybe able to assist
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated
Cheers
Peter

Re: Jumping Out Of Reverse Gear
The saga continue.
When drained the gearbox the oil was dirty but clear of any large metal bits.
The sump plug had collected some swarf but very little.
With the lid off the gearbox all appears in order, no sign of unwinding.
On jacking up the front of the car, with a little pressure on the end of the selector rod applied with a large screwdriver, reverse and all the other gears could easily be selected.
All the forward gears stayed as selected when the the pressure was removed from the end of the relevant selector rod and the front wheel gently rocked back and forth.
The exception was reverse, as soon as the pressure was removed from the selector rod and the wheel rocked it jumped out of gear.
It has my mate flummoxed and he has been a mechanic for over 50 years.
Any ideas as to what the problem may be?
All advice appreciated

Re: Jumping Out Of Reverse Gear
With the lid off then by looking where the fork on the middle rail goes into the synchromesh groove is that bouncing up and down if you try move it .. ….although in reverse causes the problem it’s not the reverse that’s the problem.
Re: Jumping Out Of Reverse Gear
If you cannot fix it I have surplus gearboxes for both drum and disc braked cars at £75 each. Buyer pays postage or collects from PE4 6DE (North Peterborough).
