Brake fluid

Post by pm-vern » Sat Nov 12, 2016 4:52 pm

Hi,
I'm in the process of changing the brake fluid on my 223, I understand the disc brakes require LHM fluid and the drums DOT 4.
I've got front discs and rear drum but only one reservoir which has a green fluid in it - any ideas which fluid to use?

I've also got a pair of small 10" wipers on the windscreen - they are in a chrome mounting, the rubber appears to be integral to the mount. Any ideas what they might be & what I need to try & source as replacements?
I've put a photo below to show what I'm looking for.

Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks,
Paul.

Paul,
The brake system has a split Master Reservoir, BUT the brakes Disc and Rear Drum both use the same fluid.
You should use LHM to top up the reservoir. DO NOT use dot fluid as it will attack the seals and you will have to rebuild the entire brake system. :(
Don't know re wipers try the internet.

Thankyou very much.
I've found out the wipers are MG wipers, I found the exact ones on e.bay Austrailia, but no joy elsewhere, so far.

Hi Paul,
As Bill says fluid must be LHM.

Re Window wiper blades try Car Builder Solutions part number WBR or WBS10 for sprung type

Caterham Seven ones are 10" so might fit OK. I had chrome ones on mine (like your current ones) but they do black too. I have a feeling the chrome ones were fitted to early Landrovers as well!!!

I'd second the suggestion of Landrover wipers. Those I fitted to my Falcon S used the same (rubber pressed between folded metal and a pin through it).. They're designed for use on flat screens only. If I recall I bought them and simply snipped off theeir top end (to required length). They worked well, lasted a long time, much easier to cut size, and very much neater (slimmer) than modern sprung wiper blades..

And again I second LHM (as you already have green). Do not mix with Dot.4
My Ami-Super uses GS front brakes & drums at the rear, has a single reservoir and likewise uses Green LHM. I was led to understand the nice thing about LHM is that it doesn't absorb atmospheric moisture half as much as Dot.4 so the braking system cannot internally corrode.

Hope that helps, Pete

p.s. pretty car, but I might be inclined to round of those top windscreen corners.. They look potentially painful !
