Alternator Mount
Hi,
Can anyone supply me with a photo or a link to an image of a bracket arrangement to mount the alternator. Having removed the drive belt cover from my engine, I've discovered that there is an idler pulley installed below the alternator (not an original) and the whole assembly is hanging from the crankcase halves bolt (just the one point); all very dodgy looking. The alternator pivot points have also been removed from the exhaust manifold.
I've trawled the internet, looked through various workshop manuals, parts catalogues and images. The closest I have seen was what appears to be a steel platform that sits across the two crankcase halves and is secured by the crankcase halves bolt. Where the other end of the plate is secured (if at all) I have no idea.
For engine cooling and dirt avoidance, I want to keep the alternator located alongside the carburetter.
Thanks for any assistance.
Regards Paul

Look at image 3 in this 121 image Photobucket file. It's Lomax, it's not pretty but it does line everything up. If you want I can measure it up and send you a dimensioned drawing.

Re: Alternator Mount
Hi Paul
I’m working offshore at the moment but should get home early next week around Wednesday; I can e-mail you a photo of the alternator mounting I fabricated for my Lomax if that’s any good?
When I bought my Lomax the original alternator bracket was not very substantial and was not lined up properly. I could not locate a better mounting so hence ended up making my own.
If you don't get sorted and want me to send you a photo e-mail me at e.carass@btinternet.com

Where does the Lomax bracket attach on the engine? I'm assuming the two uprights accomodate the alternator pivot point, but what does the threaded nut do and the hole at the rear (underside?) of the bracketdo?

Re: Alternator Mount
The bracket is as far as I know a Lomax part made from 2 x 1 1/2" steel channel. The picture is shown as it was when I got the car and I've since ground and filed big lumps off it to make it lighter, although it's still far too 'over-the-top' in my eyes. Yes the two tabs are where the alternator mounts and the welded-on nut is where a set screw goes to provide tension to the v-belt. The hole in the back is where a longer bolt passes through as the bracket is mounted on the forward projecting part of the alloy crankcase, immediately below the oil filler flange. It still looks a bit Mickey Mouse to me and I may well design a better bracket in time.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the info; all is clear. I see what you mean about the Mickey Mouse bit; there seems to be a lot of weight hanging on the one point, especially when you take onto acount jolts on the road, let alone a rock-strewn trials section. Eddie has kindly offered to send me a photo of his bracket arrangement, so I'll see what turns up.

Re: Alternator Mount
Having gone through quite a few permutations of alternator bracket in the last 25 years, the final one I made for my Visa engine is by far the best. This idea would work on a 2CV engine as well. I too thought that there was too much hanging from just the one bolt on the front of the engine, so I made a platform from 3mm mild steel that not only picked up on the front bolt, but also on the oil filler flange with its two M7 threads. The platform is actually the meat in a sandwich consisting of crankcase/gasket/platform/gasket/oil filler, if that makes sense. Of course, there is a large hole in the platform for the oil to go through ! Having made the platform, there is then a sub-bracket on slotted holes for the alternator. This ensures final alignment when fitting to the engine. Hope this idea helps.
