Lomax Incidence of cast rocker cover on cooling

Post by Lomax76 » Sat Nov 23, 2019 9:44 pm

Cooling of a Lomax with no fan is a recurrent topic. I am myself experimenting high temperature in hot summer or in traffic jam even thought everybody is saying this is no problem and the engine is known as being robust I want to preserve it.
This being said I am wondering if the Lomax cast rocker cover being so massiv are counter productive for the heat dissipation. I think I should swap the cover with a thinner one, preferably old type on aluminium. Thought idea welcome.

I use the early cast Citroen covers on my 602 engine, they use a different gasket to the pressed covers.

Look Nice, being thinner might ease the heat transfert and thus provide a better cooling performance.
The gasket must be the same as for the regular cover rocket, is it not?

The material of construction makes the biggest difference. Aluminium has considerably higher conductivity than steel and the increased thickness makes very little difference. It is also said that the larger internal volume of the cast covers reduces the temperature, although I have some doubts about that.

Thanks for the answers
Actually I think both the thickness and the exchange surface do matter, so I will try the old aluminium cover ASAP.

Attached is photo showing the difference between the gasket for the steel cover (upper) and the aluminium cover.
The early gasket (available from ECAS & Der Franzose) seals correctly on my 602 cylinder heads.

I find a larger oil filter on a 3/4" unf adaptor (available from Def Franzose) helps by increasing oil capacity.

Thanks for the feedback I found the gasket difference in Burton this is clear. For the larger filter I should explore further. As the engine need to run around 80°c a thermostatic valve might be required for a better preheating phase

I use a smaller oil filter (Ford Fiesta) on the same 3/4" unf adaptor in the winter.
I find with the oil cooler blanked off with Tank tape and using 10/40 oil the engine quickly reaches operating temperature, correct temperature and pressure was maintained on a 70 mile trip last weekend.

Jack,
Thanks again for your time I can see there some solution. However it is worth checking the specification of the filter , the two filter in the pictures have an opening valve @2,5bar Citroen recommend 1,5 bar
Champion C104
Bypass valve pressure : 2,5 bar
KNECHT FILTER - OC 51
Bypass valve pressure : 2,5 bar
